Hiring an RV technician isn’t just about checking a resume for experience. The interview is where you find out if they can actually do the job — and do it well.

Because RV technicians wear multiple hats (mechanical, electrical, diagnostic, even customer service), you need to ask questions that go beyond the basics. At SourceLine, we’ve spent decades in the service world, and we know the difference between a solid tech and a seat-filler.

If you’re hiring for a dealership, service center, or mobile RV repair business, here are the top interview questions to ask RV technician candidates—plus what their answers should tell you.

Technical Questions That Matter

1. “Walk me through a time you diagnosed an electrical issue in an RV.” You're not looking for a textbook answer. You want to hear their process: Did they test the converter? Check 12V vs. 120V? How did they isolate the fault?

✅ Good answer: Step-by-step diagnosis with logical order🚩 Red flag: "I just replaced the fuse" with no explanation

2. “What experience do you have working with LP gas systems?”

This is about safety and certification. Anyone working with propane should understand leak checks, regulator testing, and appliance inspection.

✅ Good answer: Familiar with leak detection, bubble tests, appliance inspection🚩 Red flag: No mention of LP safety or formal training

3. “Have you worked on slide-out systems or leveling jacks?” This separates auto techs from real RV techs. Slide-outs are notorious for mechanical, electrical, and alignment issues. Bonus if they’ve worked on hydraulic vs. electric systems.

✅ Good answer: Can name systems they’ve serviced (Lippert, Schwintek, etc.)🚩 Red flag: “I haven’t done much with that yet…”

4. “Tell me about a repair you did on an RV roof, wall, or floor.” This reveals fabrication skills and comfort with structural repair — critical for RV collision or water damage work.

✅ Good answer: They’ve patched, sealed, or rebuilt RV exteriors and know sealants/materials🚩 Red flag: “I’ve only done mechanical stuff”

5. “What tools do you bring to the job?” RV shops expect techs to have their own basic tools. This question gauges prep, experience, and investment in their craft.

✅ Good answer: Full set of hand tools, meters, maybe even welding or woodworking gear🚩 Red flag: “I just use whatever’s at the shop”

Questions to Gauge Fit and Independence

6. “Are you more comfortable working independently or as part of a team?” RV techs are often solo on jobs—especially mobile techs. Look for comfort making decisions and troubleshooting without supervision.

7. “How do you handle warranty repairs or customer complaints?” Good techs know how to handle pressure and communicate with service advisors or customers when repairs don’t go smoothly.

8. “Have you ever done PDI inspections?” Pre-Delivery Inspections require a detailed eye and ability to spot problems before they become bigger issues. It’s a valuable skill in a dealership setting.

Bonus Tip: Always Ask About RVTI or Certifications

Not every tech will have formal certifications—but if they’re familiar with RVTI, EPA 608, or OSHA 10, that’s a big plus. It means they’re committed to the industry long-term.

The Big Picture: Are They Reliable, Skilled, and Adaptable?

The RV industry is specialized. Whether you're hiring for a dealership in Florida or a mobile service in Arizona, your technician needs to do more than “turn wrenches.” They need to understand RV systems, be comfortable with multi-system diagnostics, and show up ready to work.
